Flooding possible along Lake Erie shoreline

The local conservation authority has issued an advisory ahead of strong winds that will increase the risk of flooding along the Lake Erie shoreline.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority said on Wednesday that wind speeds are expected to increase to above 30 kilometres per hour overnight into Thursday morning. Winds forecasted out of the southwest are then expected to reach up to 40 km/h and last into Friday. The wind will likely subside later in the day on Friday.

While the conservation authority has yet to issue a flood watch or warning, conservation officials said the combination of strong winds and elevated lake levels will increase the risk of flooding, nearshore erosion, and wave activity for the Lake Erie shoreline in Amherstburg, Essex, Kingsville, Leamington, and Pelee Island.

The public is being urged to use caution to avoid flood-prone areas along the shoreline as conditions can become dangerous.
