UPDATE: Police investigating after child killed in a hit-and-run

Windsor police are appealing to the public for help after a child was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Sunday night.

It happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Jefferson Boulevard near Haig Avenue. Emergency crews were dispatched to the location after a report was received of a collision involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they noticed emergency crews tending to a child with life-threatening injuries. The child was rushed to hospital, but could not be saved.

Investigators believe that the vehicle involved fled the scene.

The Windsor police Forensic Identification Unit and collision reconstruction unit worked at the scene for several hours, according to Sergeant Steve Betteridge.

The suspect vehicle has been described as a silver-coloured SUV or crossover, likely with front end damage.

Police are looking for the vehicle and its driver, said Betteridge. Several witnesses have been interviewed and an image from security camera footage of the suspect's vehicle has been released by police (see above). The driver of the vehicle is also being asked to contact police.

"Anyone who lives in the area or was driving in the area around the time of the incident is requested to review their video surveillance," said Betteridge.

The victim has not been identified.

Anyone with information who has not spoken with investigators is urged to call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4000. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
