UPDATE: Flood warning issued for Lake Erie shoreline

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a flood warning for residents along the Lake Erie shoreline in Essex County.

Flooding in Leamington along Point Pelee Drive (County Road 33) between Sturgeon Creek and Point Pelee National Park, has prompted the conservation authority to upgrade the watch, to a warning on Sunday. Gale force wind conditions out of the southwest have caused significant wave activity in the area creating wave overtopping and spray.

Forecasts indicate that strong winds are expected to continue throughout the remainder of Sunday, and the advisory will remain in effect until Monday at noon.

The combination of high lake levels and waves has caused water to begin pooling in low lying areas on private lands and within the Point Pelee Drive right-of-way.  Water has also begun pooling on private lands along Robson Road which is starting to make its way onto the roadway with significant waves overtopping breakwall structures along the shoreline.

Residents are reminded to avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind events.
