New Leger poll shows support for a COVID-19 curfew

A majority of Canadians would favour a curfew if it meant slowing the spread of COVID-19, according to a new poll.

The latest Leger survey, published Tuesday, showed that 67 per cent of respondents would be in favour of a curfew, should the virus' spread be severe enough to warrant it. Twenty-five per cent opposed the idea of a curfew, while eight per cent did not know.

The results were about the same among Ontario respondents, with 64 per cent in favour, 26 per cent opposed, and 11 per cent who did not know.

According to Leger, some provinces have considered the idea of a temporary overnight curfew, with a timeframe of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. being an example.

Canadians were also asked their views on the long-term consequences of COVID-19. About 41 per cent of people believed that it will take years for the Canadian economy to recover from the impact of the virus. Twenty per cent thought that the hard-hit hospitality and retail industries would also take years to recover, if at all. An additional 14 per cent thought the virus was taking its toll on people's mental health.

A total of 1,534 Canadians were surveyed online between November 6 and November 8. The sample of Canadians reflected in this survey had a 2.5 per cent margin of error.
