Windsor's unemployment rate jumps in October

The loss of 800 jobs in October pushed Windsor's unemployment rate up a full percentage point to 10.8 per cent.

Statistics Canada released its Labour Force Survey for October Friday morning. It conducted the survey between October 11 and October 17.

The growth in the jobless rate is the first since June but comes around the time when many companies would have made temporary layoffs due to COVID-19 permanent.

Across the country, the economic growth slowed as new COVID-19 restrictions took place in many jurisdictions, including in the Toronto and Ottawa areas in Ontario.

The provincial rate also increased, although slightly, to 9.6 per cent, up a tenth of a percentage point from September.

The national rate did not change much from September. It went down just a tick to 8.9 per cent, from 9 per cent in September.

Job growth stalled in transportation and warehousing, and construction. It slipped in the accommodation and food services sector for the first time since May when the economy slowly began to reopen. However, it exceeded pre-pandemic levels in wholesale trade, professions, scientific and technical services, and education.

Self-employment grew for the first time in eight months. It grew by 1.2 per cent or 33,000 positions.

Another 84,000 jobs were added to the national economy, of which 69,000 were full-time. Most of the growth last month was in Quebec, although Ontario was among the six provinces that saw an upward trend.

The agency said 1.1-million workers are still impacted by the pandemic, but that is down from a peak of 5.5-million in April.

The Labour Participation rate in Windsor grew by three-tenths of a percentage point to 57.4 per cent.
