Tilbury truck blitz finds unsafe rigs

A blitz in Tilbury this week aimed at getting unsafe trucks and drivers off the road discovered several faulty rigs and a couple of impaired drivers.

Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex, Chatham and London and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) checked 442 vehicles during the eight hour initiative on Thursday and conducted seven inspections, resulting in eight vehicles being put out of service for offences under the Highway Traffic Act.

OPP Constable Amanda Allen said MTO officers were looking for driver or mechanical deficiencies while OPP officers were looking for drunk drivers by conducting alcohol breath tests.

Constable Allen added the MTO took six vehicles off the road while OPP officers issued three-day driver licence suspensions to two drivers after they registered some alcohol in their system.
