Unifor Local 444 prepares for strike

Unifor Local 444 members are preparing for a possible strike Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.

Negotiations between Unifor and FCA Canada are ongoing but members gathered Tuesday to make strike signs and learn their strike assignments.

"It's basically a waiting game, hopefully, all this planning and preparation we don't have to use it," said Strike Captain Shawn Bezaire.

As the strike deadline looms, Bezaire said members are feeling pretty grim especially with the loss of the third-shift at the Windsor Assembly Plant in July.

"We do have about 530 members on an indefinite layoff so it's a little gloom and doom at this point but hopefully we can sustain a new product and move forward with some job security," said Bezaire.

Bezaire said he is confident the bargaining committee will not leave the negotiation table without a strong deal for the members.

Last month, Unifor Canada reached a three-year agreement with Ford Canada that included $1.95 billion of investment in two Ontario automotive plants.
