The federal government is introducing a new process that will allow some cross-border families to reunite.
Certain extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be allowed to apply through this process to enter Canada. Those family members include adult children, grandchildren, siblings and grandparents as well as those in an exclusive dating relationship of at least 1 year and their dependent children.
Foreign nationals will also be allowed into Canada for compassionate reasons in specific circumstances such as a life-threatening illness.
The country is also allowing international students back. The students must be attending a college or university with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan in place.
Detailed information on who may qualify as an extended family member and the process and requirements to be eligible to travel to and enter Canada will be available on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website on October 8, 2020.
Anyone entering Canada will still need to quarantine or isolate for 14 days immediately upon entry.
Each traveller will need to apply for and be issued authorization before they can travel to Canada. Travellers are advised to not make any travel arrangements until they have the necessary authorization.
