Partial recreation services returning to Windsor

The City of Windsor has some good news for those wanting to take classes at local community centres.

Several recreation complexes that were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic will reopen for fall and winter programs. Pending public health guidelines and registration numbers, additional youth and adult programs are being scheduled.

"We know that physical fitness and mental health go hand in hand. As we prepare for cooler temperatures and a potential second wave of COVID-19, maintaining active, healthy lifestyles will become even more important," said Mayor Drew Dilkens in a media release. "We’re restarting some programming and re-opening some recreation centres to create the spaces Windsor residents need to stay active and healthy."

After-school programs for those aged six to 18 will resume at Windsor Water World, Adie Knox Herman Recreation Complex, and the Gino and Liz Marcus Community Complex. If there is sufficient demand, the WFCU Centre and Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex will reopen on October 19 for preschool activities, Thai Chi, yoga, karate, and other classes.

Registration for these programs will open on Monday, October 5 online.

Programming that had resumed under Ontario's Stage Three economic reopening is under pre-pandemic attendance levels, according to the release. For example, at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre, reserved fitness lanes are operating at a maximum of 52 per cent capacity, according to the city.

Ice rentals have resumed at the WFCU Centre and Capri Pizzeria complex, with current use at 80 per cent capacity during peak times, and 15 per cent at off-peak times.

The administration will continue to monitor the ongoing pandemic situation, as well as registration levels and feedback from residents, to determine what additional programs can be reinstated in the weeks and months ahead.
