Catholic school board reports a case of COVID-19

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in a Windsor-Essex school has been reported.

According to the website of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, one student at Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School in Amherstburg has tested positive for the virus.

Few additional details have been released, but board spokesman Stephen Fields told BlackburnNewsWindsor.com on Tuesday that just one cohort has been affected.

"The health unit is managing all of the contact tracing and directed us to dismiss a cohort of about 20 students today to self-isolate for 14 days," said Fields in an email to the newsroom. "The health unit had school nurses on site today to provide additional information and support to parents as they were picking up their children, and they were provided with a letter from the school board."

It was not immediately disclosed what grade the student is in.

School boards across Ontario are required to publicly post details on COVID-19 outbreaks that occur in the classroom. A provincewide summary of outbreaks is available on the province's official website.

The board's website also reported that Stella Maris will remain open as usual.
