Windsor police retrieve firearm from stolen pickup

Investigators are trying to piece together the events surrounding a stolen pickup and a firearm.

Windsor police said the gun was recovered from a pickup truck that was severely damaged in a collision on Sunday afternoon, following a chain of events that took place throughout the weekend.

The incident began around 4:45 p.m. Saturday on Windermere Road near Ottawa Street. Officers responded to a call about a stolen Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The theft had taken place minutes earlier.

A patrol officer spotted the vehicle at around 4 p.m. Sunday. It was driven by a lone occupant in the area of Walker Road and Seminole Street. When the driver saw the police vehicle, they sped off. The officer did not pursue the vehicle out of respect for public safety, according to Sergeant Steve Betteridge.

Moments after the encounter, the vehicle was found severely damaged in the area of Henry Ford Circle Drive and Seminole Street. Police determined it had collided with a parked vehicle. Witnesses said the driver ran from the scene toward Alexis Road and may have suffered from facial injuries. No injuries were reported from the crash itself.

A firearm was discovered in the pickup truck soon after the collision. The streets in the immediate area were closed for a while Sunday afternoon while officers investigated.

The driver is described as a white male, about 25 years old, clean-shaven, and with short hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and long black shorts below the knee.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone who may know who the suspect is, or can provide more details on the events, is asked to call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4350. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
