Mask mandate passed in Lakeshore

You can add Lakeshore to the list of Windsor-Essex municipalities with by-laws requiring public mask use.

Lakeshore Town Council has passed a by-law requiring people to wear some form of a face covering in publicly-accessible enclosed spaces. The by-law also requires operators of establishments to ensure that people in such areas wear a mask unless they are exempt.

The by-law goes for customers, staff, and visitors to businesses and takes effect immediately.

"Masks and face coverings can include a conventional mask or a face covering such as a bandana, scarf, cloth or similar item that covers the nose, mouth and chin without gapping," read a statement released by the Town of Lakeshore on Friday. "Operators of enclosed public spaces are required to post visible signs with specific messaging about mandatory mask requirements."

As is the case with most mask by-laws, exemptions do exist. Those who cannot wear a face covering for medical reasons are excused, along with children under the age of two, and other accommodations as indicated by the Ontario Human Rights Code.

People who are eating or drinking, engaging in a service that requires an uncovered face, or exercising are also exempt.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has had a mandate for public mask use in place since mid-June. However, by-laws requiring mask use have also been passed in Amherstburg, Tecumseh, and Chatham-Kent. In Windsor, Mayor Drew Dilkens ordered a mandate for mask use via his emergency powers.
