Ontario pausing any plans to loosen public health measures

The Ontario government is taking a "pause" on any further reopenings or loosening of public health measures as children head back to school.

During a daily COVID-19 update, government officials said the recent stretch of triple-figure increases in daily new cases has raised concern.

"Spread in the community will also likely mean spread in the schools, so we need to limit the spread in the community as much as possible and that's why we're not proceeding with any further extension of any measures," said Minister of Health Christine Elliott. "That's including any greater size of our social circles, any greater increases on the number of people who can go to sports events or those sorts of things because we want to keep community transmission very low so that it won't get into our schools so our children will be safe."

Elliott said taking a pause now will help ensure the province does not need broad-scale closures in the future.

The pause will last at least four weeks or two 14-day monitoring cycles.
