WECHU identifies link among 31 COVID-19 cases

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has identified a community cluster of COVID-19 cases.

In the last two weeks, the health unit identified 31 cases among five families that can be linked back to gatherings held on August 16 and 17.

"It started off with people who were not maintaining physical distancing in many of these social gatherings and then resulting in more spread within the community," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. "Then the next set of people, after they are exposed to that initial event, they went on to the next event."

Dr. Ahmed said they are highlighting this cluster to show how easily the virus can spread in the community.

"Our purpose is to control the spread of the disease. It's not the time to point fingers and it's not the time to shame anyone," said Dr. Ahmed.

Among the 31 cases, 19 involve people between the ages of 14 and 19.

All of the public exposure alerts recently issued by the health unit can also be linked back to individuals in this cluster.
