Ford recalls over 488K vehicles for brake system issue

Almost half a million SUVs sold in North America have been called back by the Ford Motor Company.

The automaker issued a safety recall on select 2015 to 2018 Ford Edge models, along with 2016 to 2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles, due to a potential rupture of the front brake jounce hose.

"A ruptured front brake jounce hose will cause a progressive brake fluid leak," read the recall notice. "If the brake fluid reservoir is depleted below a certain level, the brake fluid warning light will illuminate. The driver may experience an increase in brake pedal travel, together with a reduction in the rate of deceleration, increasing the risk of a crash."

A total of 488,594 of the models were sold in North America, with 62,876 sold in Canada.

There have been no reports of collisions or injuries connected to this defect.

All of the models in question were built at Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant. The Edge vehicles were built between June 25, 2014, and December 21, 2017. The Lincoln MKS models were made between November 11, 2014, and December 21, 2017.

Vehicle owners should receive a recall notice in the mail. The dealer will, at no charge, replace the front brake jounce hoses with new hoses that have a revised braid material.

The reference number for this recall notice is 20-S-42.
