Windsor police promotes first Black staff sergeant

History has been made at the Windsor Police Service.

The service announced Tuesday that it had promoted Ed Armstrong to the rank of Staff Sergeant. The promotion marks the first time in the service's 153-year history that a Black Canadian has been named to the position.

Armstrong joined Windsor police in 1998 and served in several uniform positions before he was named to the Emergency Services Unit. During his time in the ESU, Armstrong developed a reputation as a leader, becoming an expert instructor, then being promoted as Team Leader.

In 2018, Armstrong was promoted to Sergeant and joined the Community Services Branch, participating in numerous community collaborations.

A native Windsorite, Armstrong attended Riverside High School, St. Clair College, and the University of Windsor.
