The campus police force at the University of Windsor has a new director and it's a familiar face.
Matt D'Asti, who has filled various positions over a 30-year career with Windsor police, assumed his new responsibilities at the university on Monday. His retirement from Windsor police was official on Friday.
D'Asti succeeds Mike Mackinnon as campus police director. Mackinnon has retired after 10 years leading the force.
Ryan Flannagan, the university's assistant vice-president of student experience, said D'Asti's ties within the community made him an ideal fit.
"I am thrilled that we have someone of Matt's skills and experience coming to join our team," said Flannagan in a media release. "Our community will benefit tremendously as a result of Matt's expert knowledge of community policing and his connections across the city and the province."
Throughout his tenure with Windsor, D'Asti had worked on patrol, street crimes, sexual assault, criminal investigations, and analysis, achieving the rank of inspector. D'Asti was probably best known as the service's public information officer.
D'Asti is no stranger to the U of W community, having studied criminology there.
"Knowing the critical role that U of W plays in the local community and recognizing the importance that safety plays in the lives of students, staff, and faculty, I'm confident that we'll be able to maintain the high level of service and support that Campus Community Police has delivered in recent years," said D'Asti. "I'm looking forward to getting involved and trying to make a difference."
