Cooling centre opened in downtown Windsor

The City of Windsor is providing some relief from the heat for those who can't find it elsewhere.

A temporary cooling centre has been set up in the atrium of the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre, located at 401 Pitt Street West.

This comes after a heat warning was issued for the region, with daytime high temperatures expected to range from 30 C to 33 C on Sunday and Monday.

City staff will be on-site at the cooling centre to assist anyone who attends. According to a media release from the City of Windsor, tables and chairs will also be set up to ensure physical distancing requirements are met.

"Advanced screening of all visitors to this location will be in effect, and visitors should be prepared to answer questions upon entry," stated the release. "Masks are also suggested to be worn if attendees have them. In an effort to ensure physical distancing can be adhered to, it is asked that people attend this site only if they have no other options."

Anyone who attends is reminded to bring food, as none will be provided.

The centre will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday and is scheduled to remain open during those hours each day the heat warning is in place.

In addition, the day program at Windsor Water World remains open for individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

The day program provides shelter from the heat while allowing for more physical distancing within the city's shelter system. The program is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
