Harmful blue-green algae present in Southwood Lakes ponds

Residents in Southwood Lakes are being warned of a potentially dangerous bacteria that may be growing in the neighbouring ponds.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, are a microscopic bacteria that can naturally occur in freshwater during the late summer and early fall. Warm weather, the right nutrients, and low wind can cause algae to grow rapidly. These algae blooms can make the water appear a bluish-green colour, and can begin to form solid-looking clumps which contain toxins that are dangerous to the health of humans, and animals who may drink, or swim in the infected water.

The ponds in Southwood Lakes were designed as stormwater facilities to gather excess rainfall. Due to the suspected presence of blue-green algae, it is strongly recommended that residents refrain from using the ponds for recreational activities. Pets and young children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of this toxic algae and should be kept away from the water.

The city of Windsor is asking Southwood Lakes dwellers to restrict the use of outdoor fertilizers for the time being as they may contribute to the growth of all types of algae including cyanobacteria. City workers will continue to monitor the situation and will provide an update as it becomes available.

Rain and cooler temperatures will help clear the ponds of algae. More information on blue-green algae can be found on the health unit's website.
