Artwork needed to decorate hotel rooms of isolating migrant workers

Lynda Leopold knows what it is like to be away from home and stay in a hotel room for an extended period.

"I travel for work and I know the four walls of a hotel room can be catastrophic," she said.

With many migrant workers staying in hotels while they self-isolate with COVID-19, Leopold started to think it must be lonely.

So, the local woman set up a Facebook page and she is looking for artwork to brighten up those rooms.

"I figured that would be a great central place where we could work on it," she explained. "I called it 'WE,' you know, that usual riff on Windsor-Essex, WE Care for Migrant Workers."

Leopold said she hopes parents will encourage their kids to create bright artwork to hang in the hotel rooms. However, she did not want to make it exclusive to children. Adults are also invited to create art.

She also encouraged people, if possible, to include a friendly phrase in Spanish, the mother tongue of many migrant workers.

"I have a friend who speaks some Spanish. He was able to craft a couple of phrases for me in Spanish that express our concern and care for these guys," she said. "I posted that on the Facebook page so if adults want to grab some blank note cards and just write out these phrases. A few dozen of those and we can get those distributed as well."

Back in April, Essex Windsor EMS Chief Bruce Krauter put out a similar call to decorate the field hospital where many seniors were isolating with the virus.

"They're not the most inviting places," he said at the time. "They're just small. They're stark. There's no windows."

Leopold admitted she took some inspiration from Krauter's initiative to create WE Care for Migrant Workers.
