Leamington a step closer to new police service

The Municipality of Leamington is developing its wish list for policing in the town.

Council voted to put out a request for a proposal (RFP) to contract police services.

"We just want an accountable police force that we know what we are paying for every time we renew the contract and we haven't had that since 2014," said Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald.

MacDonald said they have requested that kind of information from the Ontario Provincial Police in the past but have never been given straight answers. This led the council to vote to terminate its contract with the OPP.

Municipal staff is currently developing the RFP in consultation with council.

"Since 2014, we've not been given numbers. We have no idea how many officers work per day, what the minimum is per shift, we want to be able to prescribe that for our community," said MacDonald.

The RFP will likely be issued in the fall.

The OPP remains under contract with Leamington until May 26, 2021. If a new police service is not in place by then, the OPP will continue to police the municipality on a month to month basis.
