FCA to get a new name after merger with Peugeot

Two of the world's biggest automakers, about to complete a merger, will get a new branding once it's closed.

Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and French automaker Peugeot will become known as Stellantis once the merger is completed sometime in 2021. According to a joint media release, a new name had been in the works since the merger agreement was announced.

"Stellantis is rooted in the Latin verb 'stello', meaning 'to brighten with stars,'" read the media release. "It draws inspiration from this new and ambitious alignment of storied automotive brands and strong company cultures, that in coming together are creating one of the new leaders in the next era of mobility, while at the same time preserving all the exceptional value and the values of its constituent parts."

The release also stated that Stellantis would be used at the group level as the corporate branding. The next step is the creation of a corporate logo. The names and logos of the automotive makes affected by the merger will be left alone.

Groupe PSA owns Peugeot, a French conglomerate that also owns automaker Citroen, German manufacturer Opel and British make Vauxhall. The combination of the two automotive conglomerates will result in the world's fourth-largest automaker, after Toyota, Volkswagen Group, and Hyundai-Kia.

The merger is expected to be completed by winter 2021. FCA operates the Windsor Assembly Plant.
