Significant increase in overdose calls over the weekend

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is again raising the alarm about the number of drug-related overdoses in the city.

The health unit's surveillance and monitoring system reported an unusually high number over the weekend. It said Windsor police officers responded to nine overdose calls, all of them involving fentanyl.

Most of the calls between July 10 and July 12 were within city limits, and four were downtown.

In some cases, up to 10 doses of naloxone were given to the victims to reverse the overdose's effects.

The health unit said it is also aware of an increase in EMS calls for suspected opioid misuse over the same period.
