Fight to keep access road open along Hwy 3, save 4-D Sausage Kitchen

For more than 30 years, 4-D Sausage Kitchen has been a fixture on the access road along Highway 3, but if the road closes, the family fears the business could go under.

South Talbot Road is expected to close when work on Highway 3 begins, but the family is fighting back.

Stephanie Damm has launched a petition which her mother-in-law plans to submit to the Ministry of Transportation on Friday.

"The people that are making those decisions, trying to close off these roads, are in Toronto," said Damm. "They're not familiar with the area. They not familiar with how much we need those access roads."

Damm only posted the petition two days ago, but already more than 1,500 people have signed it. As many as 400 people have signed another petition kept at the store.

The family hopes the ministry changes it's mind and decides to keep the access road open.

"It's so convenient with people on number 3 highway to just get off on the Cameron Side Road exit, especially people that have never been to the business. They would see the sign, and they would just get off," explained Damm. "If there is not that access there, people are not going to stop."

Damm says area farmers will also be inconvenienced because many of them use the access road to move heavy equipment from one property to another.

Work to widen the highway from two lanes to four is scheduled to start next year.
