What's open and closed in Windsor-Essex on Canada Day?

Windsor-Essex celebrates Canada's 153rd birthday on Wednesday, and so many municipal employees and business owners will have the day off.

Canada Day is a statutory holiday, which means all federal, provincial, and municipal offices will be closed. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many of these facilities being closed anyway, electronic and telephone services will not be running on Wednesday.

There will be no Canada Post delivery, and all financial institutions will have Wednesday off as well.

All ServiceOntario offices will be closed, though selected transactions, such as licence plate renewals, may still be performed online.

The Beer Store and LCBO will be closed Canada Day with regular hours resuming Thursday. Supermarkets that carry beer will either be closed or on shortened hours. Be sure to phone ahead to avoid a wasted trip.

Windsor Public Library branches are closed Wednesday, but will be open for curbside pickup and delivery on Thursday. All Essex County Library branches remain closed until further notice due to the pandemic.

Devonshire Mall will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, along with Windsor Crossing outlets in LaSalle. Tecumseh Mall is open from noon to 5 p.m. Some stores at all three locations remain closed due to the pandemic, and social distancing guidelines are in place.

The 311 call centre is closed on Canada Day, with reduced hours resuming Thursday. The 211 call centre is open 24 hours and will be operating as usual.

In the city of Windsor, there will be no residential rubbish, yard waste, or recycling collection. These pickups will be delayed one day. Night commercial, front end loader, and weekly recycling pickups will go on as scheduled.

The public trash and household chemical drop-off depot off Central Avenue is closed Wednesday.

All indoor recreation facilities in the city of Windsor are closed due to pandemic control guidelines. Some outdoor park amenities are open such as trails and greenspaces. Arenas are closed, with the exception of the WFCU Centre's donation drop-off site, which will be closed Canada Day and reopen Thursday. More information is available on the city's official website.

Sandpoint Beach in east Windsor is closed. Adventure Bay Family Water Park is still closed due to pandemic controls.

There will be no parking enforcement in the city of Windsor on Canada Day, so all metered street parking is free. Lots and garages are still paid as usual. Payment for traffic tickets may be made online at the E-Services tab on the city's website, due to offices being closed for pandemic reasons.

Transit Windsor buses continue to operate on an enhanced Sunday and holiday schedule. The customer service office at the Chatham Street West terminal is closed Wednesday, along with the sales office on North Service Road.
