June 27 Miracle just two days away

This Saturday, residents in Windsor are encouraged to leave a box of non-perishable food and toiletries on their doorstep.

It's for the June 27 Miracle, one of the biggest food drives attempted in the city.

Over the past three weeks, organizers have been putting up signs and engaging people on social media to get the word out, and as of Thursday, an army of 10,000 volunteers has signed on to collect the food.

"The positivity and the unity of the community coming together to help one another in this time of need is what the June 27 Miracle has always been about," said Josh Lane, a member of the organizing committee.

Residents need to leave their donations on their porch before noon on Saturday.

Volunteers will pick up the donation and take them to the WFCU Centre in the city and other locations in the county. The food and toiletries will then be distributed to different food banks across the region.

Churches and other community groups with their own food banks can also benefit by calling Goodfellows, the Unemployed Help Centre, or the Windsor Essex Food Bank Association.

"Goods raised in the community, will stay in the community," said Lane. "There is a huge hidden need in the community, and that was all the inspiration we needed."

The initiative has 10,000 volunteers, but Lane admitted more are needed, especially out in the county, to sort the donations.

Lane said it would take days to measure how much was collected, but a similar drive in Chatham-Kent in May collected at least 678,000 pounds of food. Chatham-Kent may have broken the world record for the amount of food collected in 24 hours. According to Guinness World Records, the record holder is North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, which collected 559,885 pounds in 2011.
