Flood watch issued for Essex region

With severe thunderstorms possible in the forecast, the local conservation authority is advising residents about the possibility of flooding.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority said due to potential for heavy rainfall Friday evening and ongoing high lake levels, a flood watch has been issued for shoreline areas in the region.

The conservation authority said around 50 millimetres of rain could be possible over a few hours, and other pop-up thunderstorms could bring similar rainfall region-wide.

"Major tributaries are already at record high levels as a result of the high lake levels. Should we receive these amounts in localized areas over a short duration, there is a potential for flooding," the conservation authority said in a news release.

The flood watch will remain in effect until the end of the day on Friday.  An additional shoreline flood watch also remains in effect due high water levels on the Great Lakes.
