Emergency orders extended to June 30

Emergency orders under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act were set to expire on Friday, but instead, the Ontario government is extending them again, this time to June 30.

The orders have to be extended every two weeks.

The government said it would continue to review each order on an ongoing, case by case basis to see if it can be safely lifted without causing a spike in COVID-19 cases across the province.

So far, Ontario has had 32,554 people test positive for the virus since testing began. On Tuesday, there were 184 new cases. However, 84.3 per cent of those cases are now considered resolved. Another 218 people were pronounced clear on Tuesday for a total of 27,431.

"Even though we're seeing decreasing infection rates with increased testing levels, we can't let our guard down just yet," said Premier Doug Ford. "We need to keep these emergency measures in place to support our frontline heroes, and we must all continue to follow public health advice so that we can reopen more of the province safely and gradually."

The full list of emergency orders in effect is on the Government of Ontario website. They include banning social gatherings of more than 10 people.

A social circle is voluntary and should include all members of one household, plus family and friends, for a total of 10 people. Those inside a social circle can interact with others without social distancing.

While many regions of the province have advanced to stage two of reopening their economy, including Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton, and London-Middlesex, Windsor-Essex is still in stage one.

In Windsor-Essex, restaurants and bars will remain closed for all but curbside pickup and delivery.

Those businesses in regions that have advanced to stage two can open for service on patios.

The emergency orders are separate from the provincial State of Emergency which is also in effect until June 30.
