Two more deaths in the community due to COVID-19

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is reporting two new cases of COVID-19 and two additional deaths in the community.

A temporary foreign worker in his 30s passed away over the weekend. He came to Canada from Mexico in February and he had no pre-existing health conditions. He was self-isolating at a local hotel before he was taken to hospital where he later died. He is the youngest person to pass away from the virus in the Windsor-Essex community.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said with the increase of cases among agri-farm workers, they are starting to be more proactive with the health care treatment of confirmed cases.

"We are working with our partners, for example, the Essex Windsor EMS, Erie Shores Healthcare and Windsor Regional Hospital, to expand and do more in-person assessments of all these confirmed cases who are self-isolating in these motels and bunkhouses. This will allow us to identify any health care needs of these workers on an ongoing basis and address it appropriately including any transfers needed to the hospital for further assessment and management," said Dr. Ahmed.

A female resident of a long-term care facility in her 80s also passed away at the field hospital over the weekend.

The health unit completed 1,763 tests during the random testing in the Silver City parking lot over the weekend. Random testing will continue Tuesday at the Essex Arena.

To date, 18,662 people in Windsor-Essex have been tested for COVID-19. The health unit is waiting for the results of 2,218 tests. There have been 970 confirmed cases, 496 have recovered and 65 people have passed away.
