Amherstburg to celebrate a virtual Canada Day

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way one local community will celebrate Canada's birthday.

The Town of Amherstburg is inviting people to a virtual celebration of Canada Day, with the "Oh Canada Day Amherstburg" event, scheduled for June 26 to July 1.

Visitors to the Visit Amherstburg Facebook page will be able to participate in daily themed events virtually, in accordance with current provincial and municipal guidelines designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The virtual event is supported by funding from the Celebrate Canada program grant from the federal Ministry of Canadian Heritage. The money includes consideration for an alternate date for a live fireworks show.

"We are thrilled to celebrate our nation’s history now more than ever," said Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. "Our community is anxious to connect with each other and our visitors and until large gatherings are permissible, we are proud to offer this experience as a little piece of virtual Amherstburg, about our people, our town, our traditions."

The themed days of the virtual celebration are as follows:

  • Friday, June 26 – Our People, Our Town
  • Saturday, June 27 – Foodie Day
  • Sunday, June 28 – Inspirational Sunday
  • Monday, June 29 – Home is Where the Heart Is
  • Tuesday, June 30 - Memory Lane
  • Wednesday, July 1 - Happy Canada Day!
Details on the virtual Canada Day lineup are available on the Visit Amherstburg Facebook page.
