Windsor constable faces assault charges

A three-year veteran of the Windsor Police Service has been accused of committing an assault while off duty.

Investigators received a complaint Thursday morning from a resident who said they had been assaulted, according to Sergeant Steve Betteridge.

The victim and the suspect were acquaintances who had been socializing on Wednesday night. Betteridge said the two were chatting when the discussion suddenly became heated and the victim said they were assaulted.

The complainant was not seriously hurt and left the scene of the incident, later reporting it to police.

The suspect was confirmed as an off-duty Windsor police officer. Investigators from the Major Crimes Division arrested the officer without incident Thursday.

Constable Dejan Djurovic has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault by choking, forcible confinement, and mischief under $5,000.

Djurovic has been suspended from duty. He was released on an undertaking and will have a chance to begin responding to the charges in the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on September 22.
