Local non-profit organizations will be getting some help in the battle against the novel coronavirus.
The Windsor-Essex Community Foundation (WECF) announced Wednesday that it is supplying $600,000 to local charities in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, Community Foundations of Canada, and United Way Centraide Canada. The support is funded through the federal government's Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF).
Under the ECSF, local charities can use the funding to train new volunteers, replace one-on-one meetings with virtual ones, drive seniors and the disabled to appointments, scale-up helplines, make home deliveries, and other services.
The WECF began accepting funding applications this week from qualified donor recipients.
"Local charities and non-profit organizations have been working tirelessly to support those who need it most right now," said WECF board chairman Tom Touralias. "This additional funding is a much-needed boost to their efforts. We’re looking forward to flowing funds quickly to ensure no one in our community is left behind."
Andrea Hicks, president of Community Foundations of Canada, said local charities are on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19.
"We’re grateful for the leadership of local community foundations like Windsor Essex Community Foundation who have been at the forefront of local response efforts since the pandemic was declared," said Hicks. "Thanks to the Government of Canada’s contribution, our network will be able to unlock even more local impact for organizations serving vulnerable groups, helping us set the stage for more inclusive, resilient and sustainable communities."
Groups who are interested in applying for a grant from the WECF can visit its official website for eligibility and instructions. Funding will be offered on a continuing basis through July.
