COVID-19 claims four more Windsor Essex residents

Four more Windsor Essex residents have died from COVID-19, for a total of 31 deaths in the community.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported on Tuesday that two men in their 90s, a man in his 60s, and a man in his 40s recently passed away. The 40-year-old is the youngest recorded COVID-19-related death in Windsor-Essex. The man had high blood pressure and was an ex-smoker but had no other pre-existing health conditions.

"COVID-19 doesn't differentiate between gender, age. It can affect anyone. It can kill anyone and all of us have a role to play in doing our best to prevent and limit the spread of the infection. Not only just for ourselves, for our loved ones," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor Essex. "No one should be thinking it's not me, nothing can happen to me. It can happen to anyone."

As of Tuesday morning, 506 people in the region had tested positive for the disease, an increase of 24 people. There are 557 people waiting for their test results. Results are taking up to four days.

The health unit is managing outbreaks at six long term care and retirement homes. To date, outbreaks at three homes have been resolved. Extendicare Southwood Lakes is the latest to be taken off the outbreak list as there have been no new cases among staff or residents there for 14 days.
