LaSalle residents warned to prepare for flooding

People who live in the Town of LaSalle are being advised to prepare ahead of time for overland flooding.

In a release sent out Saturday morning, town officials said that preliminary numbers show that lake levels were well above average for the month of March. As a result of record-high water levels, a flood watch is currently in effect for all shoreline areas within the Essex Region until further notice.

Residents living near and along the Detroit River, along Front Road and west of Front Road, are at risk of flooding and significant nearshore erosion.

"It should be noted that water levels are not anticipated to peak until June-July 2020. Therefore, it is now the time for residents to take proper caution especially near shoreline areas where conditions can change quickly based on wind speed and direction," read the release.

Sandbags and sand are available free of charge for LaSalle residents at the former Centennial Arena site and at the LaSalle Public Works building. Residents must bring their own shovels and fill the sandbags on their own. Residents are also reminded to practice social distancing when filling sandbags.

Town officials are also encouraging residents to have a plan in place in case they are asked to leave their homes due to flooding.

"Plan now where you can go so that you and your loved ones can be as safe as possible," stated the release. "Have a plan for what you will bring with you, where you will park your car [and] what you will do with your pets."

LaSalle residents can register for the town's alert system at www.lasallealerts.ca to ensure they get messages sent to them directly during emergency situations including flooding.
