Town of Essex to waive property tax late charges

The Town of Essex is taking action to help residents whose finances may be impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

The town announced on Tuesday that it will waive all penalties and interest for the late payment of property taxes until July 1.

“We understand that our residents are feeling financial pressure and the stress of uncertainty,” said Mayor Larry Snively in a news release. “Council and I will continue to monitor these impacts and make decisions to help ease the burden on our community members.”

The town added that all pre-authorized payment withdrawals will continue to be taken on the scheduled dates unless otherwise cancelled by the property owner.

While all town facilities have been closed in Essex, a number of online services remain functional. Town staff can also be reached by phone at 519-776-7336 during regular business hours.

Essex and other municipalities in Essex County are taking the measure to help property owners during the pandemic after a meeting of regional municipal treasurers recently.
