What to leave out of your blue or red box in a time of COVID-19

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority is changing what it will accept in your blue box.

In a bid to keep its employees healthy, the authority is asking that if you or someone in your home is sick, not to put items like plastic bottles, pop cans, milk or juice containers in recycling. Put those items in with your garbage instead.

All used tissues, napkins, and paper towels should go in the garbage too.

Paper towels were once accepted in red boxes, but going forward, they should be considered garbage.

Non-contaminated recyclables should be placed loosely in your recycling box. However, shredded paper needs to be in a paper bag. Other items should not be placed in a bag. To protect workers, bagged recyclables will go into the garbage at the recycling plant.

Respect physical distancing and always maintain at least six feet between yourself and waste workers. Do not approach their vehicles.

If you have excessive garbage that can not be placed at the curb or stored until Windsor Public Drop Off reopens, use a private waste drop off-site. They can be found online.

Chemical waste should be stored in a safe place until the Windsor Public Drop Off reopens too. If you can not store it, bring it to the Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill in Essex, or the Transfer Station #2 in Kingsville.
