French-language teachers reach deal with government

The government has reached a tentative agreement with French-language educators in Ontario.

The Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO) represents elementary and secondary school teachers in French language school boards in Ontario.

“Above all, AEFO wishes to thank its 12,000 members [teachers and occasional teachers],” said AEFO President Rémi Sabourin. “Their encouragement and solidarity supported our efforts throughout a particularly laborious round of negotiations. We also thank parents and those who joined the fight to safeguard the success of FrancoOntarian students and the excellence of the public education system in Ontario.”

Details of the agreement will not be released until it is ratified by the union members. A ratification date has not been set.

“During this unprecedented time, we are committed to providing stability for our students and staff through the deal reached with French-language educators. In this negotiation, we advanced student priorities - including lower class sizes, enhanced special education supports, and the protection of full-day kindergarten,” said Minister of Education Stephen Lecce in an emailed statement.

The government has also reached tentative agreements with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association and the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario. Negotiations are ongoing with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.
