Windsor, other municipalities close playgrounds

Following the lead of Amherstburg, Tecumseh, and Lakeshore, more municipalities in Essex County are fencing off playground equipment and closing sports fields.

Public open spaces, parks, and trails are open. The public is encouraged to take a walk so long as they maintain a safe distance from others.

However, because of the risk of infection, the City of Windsor, Essex, Kingsville, and Leamington are closing playgrounds.

"This is directly in keeping with our overall challenge to protect our community by continuing to take measures that result in reduced exposure to this virus," said Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos. "These extraordinary times are calling on us to take some extreme measures."

The skate park in Kingsville will also be fenced off, and outdoor washrooms are closed until further notice. It also shut down its leash-free dog park.

LaSalle also closed its skateboard park at the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Centre, tennis courts, basketball courts, and pickleball courts.

Leamington has closed the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex and is putting full memberships on hold until it reopens. Personal training and small group training appointments are cancelled.

Participants in the Winter 2 session will receive a credit on account for classes missed, and swimming report cards will not be issued.

Adult programming fees have been refunded, along with March Break camp payments.

"While we are asking parents to avoid the swings and playgrounds, I will always encourage residents to get fresh air and exercise, and to enjoy one of the many open spaces maintained by the City of Windsor," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

The city maintains 989 hectares of parkland, 134 km of trail, and over 2,000 acres of green space.
