Local confirmed cases continue to rise

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has confirmed an additional three cases of COVID-19 in the region, bringing the total to nine.

One of the latest confirmed cases is a man who works in the hospital system in Michigan. He is currently recovering at home with mild symptoms. All of his close contacts have been told to self-isolate. Another of the confirmed cases also has travel history in Michigan. The health unit is still getting updates on the latest case reported.

There are currently 462 people in Windsor-Essex waiting for test results. All of these cases are presumed positive until proven otherwise and told to self-isolate at home unless their condition requires medical attention.

"Having more confirmed cases in the community definitely puts you at a higher risk but the control measures that have been put in place for more than a week now should prevent the spread if and when everyone follows it," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ahmed Wajid.

On Thursday, Windsor Regional Hospital reported 50 patients in hospital with COVID-19 symptoms waiting for test results.

There are now 858 confirmed cases in Ontario with four in Chatham-Kent, as of Friday morning. Michigan has 2,856 confirmed cases with 851 cases in Detroit.
