Three COVID-19 deaths confirmed in BC

Three new COVID-19-related deaths have been reported in the Vancouver area.

Global News reported Monday afternoon that the three deaths are all connected to the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver. The total number of fatalities in B.C. is now four people.

The total number of cases in British Columbia has reached 103, with about 30 new cases of coronavirus reported since Saturday. Five of them have fully recovered, and six acute care cases remain in hospital.

Four of the new cases have been connected to a large dental conference held in Vancouver earlier this month, and the province is asking anyone who attended to self-isolate themselves.

Despite assurances from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier on Monday that U.S. citizens are exempt from new border restrictions, British Columbia Health Minister Adrian Dix has asked Americans to stay home.

"This is incredibly important for us, the vast majority of our cases have been imported cases," said B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. "And we now acknowledge that there are no safe places around the world. People are being identified across the United States; people are being identified in countries that may not recognize that they have the transmission of this disease."

Global News also reported that the province would make a decision Tuesday on whether to reopen schools as scheduled after March Break.

A ban on public gatherings exceeding 50 people has also been put into effect in B.C., said Henry.
