Serving the community's most vulnerable during a crisis

Local food banks and shelters are making efforts to provide for the region's most vulnerable while protecting the health of their staff, volunteers and users.

The Downtown Mission's essential services remain operational. Food services through the Mission Kitchen, Windsor Youth Centre and Mission Food Bank will continue with safety precautions in place for staff and volunteers to continue serving individuals daily. As well, shelter service will remain at 875 Ouellette with assistance from valued community partners as appropriate.

"As always, the Mission is appreciative of all support from our community! At this time, donations of cleaning supplies, hand sanitizers, bottles of water, protein or fruit bars, dry cereal or granola bars, dried fruit, nuts or trail mix, meal replacement drinks and canned juices are the greatest need," said Executive Director Rev. Ron Dunn.

Dunn also renewed the call for financial donations for essential service staffing, and possible increased staffing should more significant needs arise.

Street Help is moving to a take-out food shelter model. Volunteers will package and prepare food that will be given to the homeless at the centre.

"We need more help, and we will ensure volunteers can be protected by being inside and not in contact with any of the homeless," said Christine Wilson-Furlonger.

The Kids First Food Bank will continue to operate with reduced hours. However, no one will be allowed to enter the building. Volunteers will put together bags of necessities that will be handed out at the food bank door. All clients are asked to register before attending the foodbank Hours of operation will be posted on the organization's Facebook page.

The Unemployed Help Centre is also continuing to offer its food bank services as a take out service.
