Ontario Parks suspending planned events due to COVID-19

Ontario's park system is the latest to curtail operations as the fight against the novel coronavirus continues.

The province announced Monday that Ontario Parks would suspend large events, as part of efforts to slow and stop the spread of COVID-19.

"Public safety and the well-being of our visitors and staff in Ontario's provincial parks is our top priority," said Jeff Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, in a media release. "In response to Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health's recommendation to immediately suspend large events and public gatherings of over 250 people, Ontario Parks has cancelled all planned events until further notice. All public Ontario Parks buildings, such as visitor centres, will be closed as well."

However, at parks that are currently operating, outdoor recreational opportunities such as camping and hiking will take place as usual.

Those who have booked events at Ontario Parks through April 30 will be given a chance to reschedule their event without penalty pending availability or receive a full refund.

Ontario Parks will step up cleaning measures in buildings that are still open, including washrooms, to protect staff and visitors using them.

The situation will be next reassessed on April 1. For complete information, visit the official Ontario Parks website.
