Ford Ranger pickups subject of second recall

Some Ford Ranger pickups that were subjected to a previous recall are being called back again.

The Ford Motor Company announced Wednesday that over 5,800 Ranger pickup trucks sold in North America would need an additional repair on the HVAC blower motor.

"Affected vehicles had the heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, blower motor replaced from October 9 to November 22, 2019, per recall 19-S-34," read the recall notice. "The replacement part used for that service may have been built with an improper clearance between an electrical terminal and the conductive base-plate slot that could result in a resistive electrical short."

The fault may increase the chances of the blower motor overheating, melting, smoking, or starting a fire, according to the Dearborn-based automaker. However, Ford said there had been no reports of collisions, fires, or injuries.

Some 5,384 of the affected Rangers were previously-repaired in the U.S. and just 418 in Canada. The vehicles were built at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne between August 1 to September 27, 2019.

The second recall reference number for this instance is 20-S-12.

Owners of the trucks in question should receive a recall notice in the mail or online. Ford dealers will inspect the HVAC blower-motor date code free of charge, and motors built within the suspect time frame will be replaced.
