COVID-19 website to be updated more often

The Ontario government wants to ensure residents are up to date on the status of COVID-19 in the province, so a dedicated webpage will be updated twice daily.

The province has been tracking the spread of the virus since it first appeared in Wuhan in December.

Before Monday, the website was updated once a day.

Now, the website will be updated at 10:30 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m. each day. It will include general information on each new case confirmed including the age and gender of the patient, where they acquired the virus, what hospital they were diagnosed at, and what public health unit reported the case.

"The health and well-being of the people of Ontario is our top priority," said Health Minister Christine Elliott. "Although the risk remains low, we are enhancing our reporting protocols as we continue to take decisive steps to protect the public. Ontarians can be fully confident that we are providing the information they need in order to protect themselves and their families."

So far, there have been no person-to-person transmissions within the province. However, the government has implemented an enhanced response structure. It brings together experts from across the health sector to implement provincial and regional plans to contain and respond to the virus.

Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health will continue to provide updates to the media every Monday and Thursday.

So far, 2,403 people have been tested for COVID-19 in Ontario and there are 34 confirmed cases. Of those, four are resolved.

There are 64 cases confirmed across Canada, and according to the Centers for Disease Control, 95 countries globally have reported infections.
