NDP wants paid sick days to prevent COVID-19 spread

The leader of Ontario's Official Opposition has asked the Ford government for protection against the novel coronavirus.

On Tuesday, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath requested that the Conservatives fast-track a bill through the legislature that would provide for paid sick days, ensuring sick employees can stay home and recover. Horwath said the measure would help stop the spread of COVID-19 in Ontario.

Horwath is asking that the bill include provisions to stop employers from requesting a doctor's excuse from ill employees, as well as making sure employees have access to paid time off, and are able to self-quarantine themselves if COVID-19 symptoms arise.

"The way to stop the spread of the coronavirus is to make sure anyone who might have been exposed can stay home to avoid spreading it," said Horwath. "There are serious concerns about Ontarians who can't afford to take a day off work if they're showing symptoms, and, today, workers can be forced to go to a doctor's office to get a sick note – potentially spreading whatever virus they may have."

While the likelihood of contracting the coronavirus remains very low, Horwath suggested the bill would help nip the problem in the bud.

Should the Tories introduce a bill, Horwath has pledged unanimous support from the NDP caucus so the legislation could be pushed through the legislature in one day if needed.

The Ford government repealed a law last year to grant 10 emergency days, two of them paid, to all Ontario workers. Horwath said the NDP has been in favour of giving each employee at least five paid sick days a year regardless of seniority or experience.
