Bondy calls on Snively to resign after election fraud charges

Already, there is a call for Essex Mayor Larry Snively to resign after the Ontario Provincial Police charged him in an investigation related to the municipal vote in 2018.

Councillor Sherry Bondy first raised concerns about the misuse of proxy votes, and now she believes the mayor should step down.

"I'm not sure if the community can have faith in our council with somebody who has potentially done election fraud," she told BlackburnNews.com soon after the news broke.

Police launched their investigation in October 2018 after receiving two complaints.

The charge laid by the OPP is not a criminal charge, and Snively is not obligated to step aside.

Bondy said she would not make a motion at the next council meeting, asking him to step down.

"I think it's up to the public now to apply pressure," she said. "If the people of Essex come together and say, 'hey, it's time for you to step aside. It's going to be hard to trust you going forward', then I think he has some big decisions to make."

Snively is scheduled to appear in a Windsor court on March 30 on a charge of procuring persons to vote in a municipal election when those persons were not entitled to do so.
