Brewers challenged at first ever Masters of the Brewniverse

A new craft beer competition is coming to Windsor in April, Masters of the Brewniverse.

Over the next six weeks or so, some local brewers are coming up with the most creative one-off beer they can to compete for titles like People's Choice and Master of the Brewniverse.

"A lot of brewers, they know each other," said organizer Adriano Ciotoli. "There's a lot of camaraderie there. We wanted to create kind of a playful competition -- create exclusive one-off beers and give people, not only the opportunity to try these new beers but also to vote on their favourite one."

The event, on April 18 at the Downtown Windsor Business Accelerator on Howard Avenue, will feature two sessions. Session One is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., while Session Two is 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Organizer, Adriano Ciotoli admitted it is a nod to the popular 1980s cartoon, Masters of the Universe. In keeping with the 80s theme, he encourages those who go to dress in their best 80s fashions. There will also be 80s music and Atari games.

At least four brewers have committed, including Frank Brewing in Tecumseh, GL Heritage from Amherstburg, The Grove Brew House in Kingsville, and from Chatham-Kent, Sons of Kent.

Ciotoli said others are giving the event a close look over too.

"We've opened it up to any brewery," he said. "We've even encouraged collaboration. We've told breweries if you want to partner with another one and submit a beer that you've worked on together, go ahead."

He believes the event will add to the region's reputation as a solid craft beer destination.

Tickets are limited. Only 200 will be sold. Session One tickets are $41 and $46 for Session Two. Each ticket includes 16 5oz. samples and a branded Masters of the Brewniverse tasting glass.
