Talks break down over understaffing

Talks have broken down between management and the union representing over 400 workers at two local long-term care facilities.

The personal support workers and registered practical nurses at two local Schlegel Villages locations have been without a contract since November.

"The issue is not always about the money, the issue is about how these people can keep on working short and try to take care of the most vulnerable in our communities," said Unifor Local 2458 President Tullio DiPonti.

He pointed out the issue is not unique to Schlegel Villages and the government is not providing enough supports to attract people to the field.

"It's a problem, it's a big problem and if we don't do something about it, we need the community to rally behind us. We can go a lobby the government but if the family members and community don't rally behind, and say, 'listen government, we need some incentives to get people,'" said DiPonti.

No new talks have been scheduled.
