A Windsor police officer has been awarded a gold-level St. John's Ambulance Award for saving a young man's life after he was stabbed in downtown Windsor.
On September 20, 2018, a large fight broke out outside some of the bars downtown.
"That is a night that I am going to remember forever based on the chaotic nature of how downtown was," said Windsor Police Constable David Drummond
As Drummond approached the scene, a young man separated himself from the crowd and told Drummond he had been stabbed. Drummond said his focus immediately shifted to saving this man's life.
"I just put some pressure, I put my fingers in the hole and did what I could to keep him alive. He stayed calm the whole time I remember, he was even asking me if he could text his mom," said Drummond. "He was awesome through the whole thing which I think helped save his own life."
Drummond and 23-year Dayvon Askew-Kah still have a relationship to this day.
"In my eyes, he's my hero. He made it so that I could go back and see my family and my daughter at the end of the day," says Askew-Kah.
Constable Jordan Caron, Constable Andrew Crossett, Constable Carrie Czachor, Constable Surjeet Gill, Constable Drew Palmer, Constable Anthony Ruccolo, Constable Kevin Thomas and Constable Angus McKenzie were also awarded silver level lifesaving awards for saving a life in a separate incident on November 4, 2018.
