Grants for local manufacturing plants announced

Around 200 jobs are being created at five local auto and manufacturing plants thanks to major investments by the companies and funds from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund.

Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli visited Windsor Tuesday to announce $2,086,838 in grants for Precision Stamping Group, APAG Elektronik Corp., Universal Fabricating Inc., Global Pack Packaging Solutions Inc., and Laval Tool and Mould Ltd.

"This is a signal to the business community that you have our support. Sometimes it's financial support like this that helps bring a project to completion other times it's the $5 billion in savings that all businesses across Ontario can share," said Fedeli.

The announcement was made at Precision Stamping Group where the company is completing a $16 million project to buy new stamping equipment that will produce the next generation of high-strength steel products.

"We're quite happy with where we are at right now and the progress we are making and with the investment we're seeing the actual purchase orders from the customers which is really the security we need to have these jobs," said Chris Abt, president of Precision Stamping Group.

The investment is expected to create 20 new jobs but Abt is hopeful it will lead to many more. The Ontario government contributed $813,750 to the project.

APAG Elektronik Corp. received nearly $500,000 for the company to build its first production plant in North America. APAG Elektronik Corp. designs and manufactures lighting and electronics for cars. This project is expected to create 134 jobs and should be completed by March 2024.

Universal Fabricating received nearly $300,000 to expand its manufacturing plant. This is expected to house new equipment that will boost production at the plant. This project should be completed in October 2022 and is expected to create 13 new jobs.

Global Pack Packaging Solutions is also expanding its facility. The company will receive around $300,000 from the province to invest in new equipment to provide recyclable packaging products for fresh produce and food processing industries. The project is expected to create 15 new jobs and should be completed by October 2022.

Finally, Laval Tool and Mould is looking to diversify its product and service offerings. The government is pitching in $185,210 to the project that is expected to create 12 new jobs and should be completed by December 2023.

In addition to the new jobs that are expected with these investments the companies already employ around 200 people in the community.
